Time29th May 2008 - Chicks hatch on Carousel Ride

Free as a bird … Song Thrushes, Mum and Dad have been enjoying numerous complimentary ride’s over the last four weeks while building their nest and looking after their eggs. As with all new Parents they are devoted to their offspring feeding them every ten to fifteen minutes. While the new chicks happily nestle in and catch a meal on the hoof.

Wheelgate Park Management and staff have been keeping a watchful eye on the Song Thrush family since the birds were first sighted building a nest high up in the structure of the Carousel, just under the big-top.

Team Leader, Ken Foster Commented, “ The chicks are doing fine and both parents are flying in to feed them when the ride stops and customers get on and off, we make sure we allow plenty of time, However the chicks seem very happy having a bite to eat while twirling around on the Carousel, they obviously don’t suffer from motion sickness…!!!”

The Song Thrush is a garden songbird whose numbers are declining seriously are now a Red List species.  Its habit of repeating song phrases distinguishes it from singing blackbirds.
